Carl Weathers, the actor best known for his role as Apollo Creed in the "Rocky" series, has passed away at the age of 76.

According to manager Matt Luber, Weathers died "peacefully in his sleep" on Thursday night. Weathers' family added, “Carl was an exceptional human being who lived an extraordinary life. Through his contributions to film, television, the arts, and sports, he has left an indelible mark and is recognized worldwide and across generations. He was a beloved brother, father, grandfather, partner, and friend.”

Born on January 14, 1948, Weathers began his professional career as a linebacker for the Oakland Raiders before retiring in 1974 to pursue acting. He gained prominence when he portrayed heavyweight champion Apollo Creed in "Rocky," reprising the role in three more films in the series.

Weathers also made memorable appearances as Dillon in "Predator" and Chubbs Peterson in "Happy Gilmore."

His most recent performance was as Greef Karga in "The Mandalorian," appearing in all three seasons of the show. Although Disney and Lucasfilm have announced a feature-length theatrical film with Mando (Pedro Pascal) and Grogu, there is no information yet on how Weathers' character will be involved in the story.

Carl Weathers is survived by his ex-wife, Mary Ann, and their two sons.
