Parents of the Cumberland Valley School District have been notified that a gun was found in the backpack of a middle school student.
Teachers discovered the loaded semi-automatic handgun in the backpack of a student at Eagle View Middle School, according to WGAL. The outlet also reports that the 15-year-old student has been taken into custody.
No threats were made to the school district prior to the weapon's discovery.
Superintendent Mark Blanchard notified parents with the following message: "This afternoon, building administrators discovered a student had a gun in their backpack during the school day. We are grateful to the Silver Spring Township Police Department and Cumberland Valley Police Department, who were notified and promptly responded."
He continued, "When situations of student discipline and conduct arise, we often hear the desire of our community to ensure individuals are held accountable for their actions. Privacy laws prohibit us from discussing discipline in any specific situation. However, I can assure you that the district plans to pursue the most aggressive action allowable by the School Code and law, and the student will not be returning to the building in the foreseeable future while we pursue all of those next steps."
Blanchard urged parents, students, and faculty to notify the authorities if they had any additional information.
